The Story Behind Handmade Jewellery
What actually happens at the bench, from a sketch on the back of an envelope to a finished piece.
Every piece we make begins the same way: a sketch, usually small, usually rough, drawn while thinking about something else entirely.
From the sketch we work in metal almost immediately. Sheet and wire are cut, annealed until soft, then formed over mandrels and stakes. Nothing is cast in volume; each piece is shaped individually, which is why no two are ever identical.
Texture comes next. A chasing tool, a hammer with a worn face, a rolling mill and a fine file all leave different marks, and choosing between them is most of the design work.
Then the slow part: filing, sanding through progressively finer grits, and finally polishing or brushing the surface. This finishing stage takes longer than the making, and it is the difference between something handmade and something that simply looks handmade.
Each finished piece is checked, stamped with our maker's mark, and boxed by hand. It usually takes a full day at the bench from start to finish.
