How to keep handmade gold and silver looking their best, with very little effort.
Handmade jewellery is designed to be worn, and wear is part of its character. Still, a few small habits will keep your pieces looking as they did the day they left the studio.
Put jewellery on last and take it off first. Perfume, hand cream and hairspray all dull a polished surface over time, so let them settle before fastening a chain or slipping on a ring.
Store pieces separately. Silver and gold are soft metals, and a chain rubbing against a hammered band will leave fine marks. A small pouch or a lined box for each piece is enough.
To clean, use warm water, a drop of mild washing-up liquid and a very soft brush. Dry thoroughly with a lint-free cloth. For silver that has darkened, a proper silver cloth restores the shine without removing metal.
Avoid wearing jewellery in swimming pools, the sea, or the shower. Chlorine and salt water are the two things most likely to shorten the life of a fine chain.
