How To Choose The Perfect Ring

Width, finish, fit and feel — the four things worth thinking about before you buy.

How To Choose The Perfect Ring

A ring is the piece you will look at most, so it is worth getting the details right. We think about it in four parts: width, finish, fit and feel.

Width changes everything. A 1.5mm band disappears into the hand and stacks beautifully; a 4mm band becomes the focus. If you are unsure, try a narrow band first — it is easier to add to than to live around.

Finish is about light. A hammered surface scatters it and hides everyday marks. A high polish reflects cleanly but shows scratches sooner. A matte, brushed finish sits comfortably in between.

Fit should account for the season and the shape of your knuckle. Fingers are slightly smaller in cold weather and larger at the end of a warm day. A wider band always feels tighter than a narrow one at the same size.

Finally, feel. Hold the ring, turn it, wear it for an hour. A well-made ring should be something you forget you are wearing, and notice again when the light hits it.
